Pure Terroir, Timeless Montalcino
Stella di Campalto, the visionary behind the San Giuseppe winery in Montalcino, Tuscany, has transformed an abandoned estate into a beacon of organic and biodynamic viticulture. Established in 1910, the property fell into disuse during the 1940s. In 1992, Stella’s family acquired the estate, and by 1996, she had committed to organic farming, achieving biodynamic certification in 2005.
The 13-hectare estate includes 5.5 hectares of vineyards, each plot meticulously maintained to preserve the natural ecosystem. This dedication results in wines that authentically express their terroir and vintage. Stella’s approach involves harvesting each vineyard separately and fermenting with native yeasts in large wooden vats, allowing each wine to develop its unique character.
The vineyards, situated between 240 and 340 meters above sea level near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, benefit from diverse soil types, including quartz, limestone, sand, and volcanic earth. This diversity contributes to the distinctiveness of her wines. Stella’s commitment to minimal intervention and respect for nature has positioned her as a respected artisan in the Brunello di Montalcino region.
Stella releases her wines later than many producers, believing in allowing them the necessary time to reach optimal expression. This patience and dedication to quality have made her wines some of the most sought-after in Tuscany.
